While air purification has been around for decades, recent circumstances have led to accelerated growth and awareness in the industry.
Consumer demand for air purifiers is at an all-time high and it seems that soon it will be the norm, or expectation that air purification systems are installed in all public gathering spaces from office buildings and schools to hospitals and restaurants, not to mention in all of our homes.
Beyond traditional freestanding devices and in-duct options, a number of companies are researching and developing creative ways to incorporate air purifying technologies into every day household items and products.
Like many emerging industries, some of these new products are going to be revolutionary, while others might not turn out to be so great. But one thing is for sure when creative minds start tinkering with the possibilities- innovation is bound to happen.
I’ve never been as excited about the future of air purification- not only because of the science and new technologies- but also the design possibilities and creative innovations that are being introduced.
Here are a few of the new products that are catching my attention (for better or for worse)
Furniture & Home Décor
· Ikea Starkvind is a side table that doubles as an air purifier. It looks more like a built in speaker than an air purifier, but the Starkvind works to clean the air using a three-filter system while holding your coffee cup at the same time.
· The Azio ceiling light is designed to illuminate the room and clean your air at the same time.
· The Electrolux LEAK Coatrack will not only hold your coats and hats but also works to absorb te moisture they may have accumulated from rain & sweat & essentially dehumidify them and purify the surrounding are.
· The Bottle Humidifer is shaped like a typical vase, but this isn’t just for flowers. Given that vases often sit out in the open for extended periods of time, The Bottle Humidifer uses that simple fact as an opportunity to also clean the air.
· Electrolux Parinna is a room divider that’s not only lightweight offering malleable privacy for spaces, but it also acts as an air filtration system as well as using solar energy to give off a colorful glow.
· The Vortex LED Desk Lamp has a built-in air purifier so it will light up your desk and purify the air around you.
Wearables
· Dyson Zone are an attempt to transition air purification technologies into wearables. They’re combining noise cancelling headphones and air purifying technologies
· Greentech’s PureAir Personal has been touted by the press for its simple, sleek design and ability to clean your own airspace on the go. The simple necklace has been featured in Rolling Stone, Forbes, USA Today and more for its ability to create a personal clean air zone with a rechargeable battery that lasts more than 24 hours per charge.
More innovation is on the way: there are window blinds that work to purify the air; luxury cars are all being outfitted with built-in systems.
It’s an exciting time for the air purification industry and for innovators to look beyond the traditional systems to create functional, beautiful new ways to clean the air around us.
